The death of democracy

Last night’s back bench rebellion in the House of Commons over the vote on a referendum to stay in the EU was not, as many have reported, a humiliation for the Government and David Cameron, it is fundamentally a nail in the coffin of democracy.

Over 100,000 people signed a petition asking for a referendum and judging by the responses when you ask people in the street whether they think we should be in or out of Europe, that 100,000 is just the tip of the iceberg. No, the vote was triggered by the will of the people, only to be defeated by the bully boy tactics of the Commons where MP’s were told which way they had to vote.  Two of those who voted with their conscience, and stuck to their manifesto promises, have been rewarded by being sacked from their jobs this morning.

So how come the will of the people is no longer good enough? Whatever happened to the wonderful system of democracy that we have exported around the world and now go to war over to try and allow other people and countries to enjoy it? Frankly, it’s a farce and a sham.  The end is approaching and vested interests around the country are desperately manoeuvring to try and retain the power that they enjoy and the riches and privilege that come with it.

They should remember that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. You cannot continue to ignore the people and expect to retain the status quo…

Referendum on Europe

We were promised a referendum on Europe.  I distinctly remember it as it was a key election promise but like all politicians, once into the heady corridors of power they simply ignore the plebiscite and treat us with contempt.

What makes me mad is that I never agreed to this.  I never agreed to handing over our Sovereign powers to an unelected cabal of power crazed Europeans in Brussels. I never agreed that we should turn over our fishing industry to their control and have it decimated to the point we cannot even fish off our own coasts now. I never agreed to idiotic proposals to close our power stations because they produce CO2 without having the faintest idea how we would replace the power they supply. I never agreed to reclassifying our steel plants as ‘CO2′ emitters and therefore having to close them as they are now too ‘dirty’. I never agreed to useless ugly windfarms going up all over our country and being paid for through my ever rising energy bills. And I never agreed to this damned flag permeating my daily life like a creeping plague.

So right now I am saying, give us our vote. We want the right to be consulted, as we should be in a democracy, and I want the things that my father fought for in World War II, that we have since surrendered, returned to us immediately.  We are a proud nation with a long history of fighting off oppressors, and now is the time for the silent majority to take up the rally cry and demand our vote, and rid our nation of the yoke of ‘Europe’.
